AES assists OPET Mercosur

Since June 2001, the OPET Network of the European Commission has a new member: the Associated OPET Mercosur. AES is advising this new OPET in its first promising steps to facilitate the transfer of efficient and clean energy technologies from Europe to the Mercosur region.
The OPET Network of the European Commission is a functional network of almost 100 private and public organisations throughout Europe, whose objective is to promote and disseminate modern efficient and clean energy technologies. Since 1999, so-called «Associated OPETs» in non-European countries have joined the network. Associated OPETs exist in the Andean Community, the ASEAN, the Black Sea and Caucasus regions, China, India, Russia and Southern Africa and include prestigious institutes like CENERGIA of Peru, the Tata Energy Research Institute (TERI) of India and the King Mongkut’s University of Technology Thonburi (KMUTT) in Thailand.
OPET Mercosur, the latest member of the OPET family, is hosted by the UN Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean (ECLAC) in Santiago de Chile. Based on its long-last professional relationship with ECLAC and experience with technological research, development and demonstration programmes of the European Commission, AES has been asked to act as principal advisor to OPET Mercosur.
During July 2001, a first mission to the Mercosur has been realized, in order to identify so-called OPET National Partners in Argentina, Brasil and Chile and to prepare a visit of European OPETs, industry representatives and research institutes to the Mercosur in November 2001. The mission identified a considerable interest of industry associations, governments and technological institutes in the Mercosur countries in a wide range of efficient and clean energy technologies.
